Match Report
Watford 1-3 ASB

After the disappointing draw at West Ham last week, ASB returned to action on Saturday morning to face Watford.

Having the luxury (on paper) of having a healthy looking squad of 17 players to choose from, that seemed to deteriorate when the players arrived at Cassiobury Park. Infact, when kick off arrived we only had 11 players, with one sub, a goalkeeper. Some players had no choice but to miss out, but for those of you who said yes and didn't turn up without reason, hang your heads in shame. We lined up as follows:-

Naz

Frange Orv Tina Task

Nick Riz Tim Slouch

Gav Sharkey

After a considerable amount of rain over the past couple of days the pitch held up reasonably well in the first half. We kicked off into a swirling wind and set about passing the ball around on a difficult surface, From the very first minute we were causing the Watford defence all sorts of problems, Sharkey linking well with Nick, playing some neat one two's and a few occasions led to some dangerous crosses by Nick but unfortunately we couldn't get on the end of them to put our noses in front. The makeshift defence looked solid but with virtually Watford's first attack of the game, their dangerous left winger skipped past a couple of challenges and put in a dangerous looking cross come shot and it somehow looped over Naz into the bottom corner. For the 2nd game running we would have to overturn a 1-0 deficit to get the points.

The goal was a kick up the arse and we responded in style. It was constant bombardment on the Watford goal but poor finishing and bad luck kept the scoreline at 1-0.

Our reward came soon after. Orv played the ball out of defence and released Task down the left, he played a delightfully chipped ball into the area and Riz was on hand to nod in from close range, it was no more than we deserved after being so dominant. The 2nd goal came soon after, Orv played a chipped pass up to Task who then flicked it on to the onrushing Gav who took it past a Watford defender before sliding it across the area into the path of Sharkey who made no mistake from close range and ASB were in front. Watford were reduced to long balls but they very nearly scrambled an equalizer, a long ball over top forced Naz to come rushing out, he mistimed his clearance with the bobbling around we managed to clear it and see out the rest of the half without any further scares.

HALF TIME: 1-2

The 2nd half started in very similar fashion to the first, we dominated possession from the off, it was very pleasing to watch under difficult conditions. Watford's Ginger Winger was still a chief threat giving Frange some problems with direct running but Nick was doing a good job tracking back despite playing through the pain barrier. If im totally
honest, there were so many missed chances in the 2nd half I cant actually remember half of them. Slouch was released through on goal on a couple of occasions but failed to find the target. A dangerous Nick corner was flicked on goalwards by Gav but luckily for Watford, the crossbar came to their rescue. Meanwhile at the back Tina was dealing
with everything coming into his path and making some ferocious tackles in the process. The longer the game went on, the more edgy we would become.. even though Naz barely had a save to make.

We finally killed off Watford with what must have been close to our 20th shot on goal - A dangerous inswinging corner from Task was nodded back across the face of the goal by Riz and after a mini scramble, Sharkey was on hand to poke home for his 2nd goal of the game. Sharkey then came off for a well earned break and Rob came on for the last 15 minutes or so and did a very good job in hassling the defence and holding onto the ball when needed.

We saw out the rest of the game without any scares, playing some neat and tidy stuff which was required at that stage of the game.

In truth, this was a clinical ASB performance, Watford were chasing shadows for most of the game and seeing as they beat West Ham 6-2 not so long ago, it shows how well the team played on the day given we only had 12 players in the squad. No special praise given as I believe this was a total team performance, everyone from goalkeeper to Striker worked their socks off and we got what we deserved, although on another day, We would have been out of sight by half time. If we continue with performances like this then there is no reason as to why we can't, at the very least
claim 2nd spot in the table.
