Welling VS ASB – Saturday 9th March

After a 10 mile hike to the ground from the train station the ASB squad arrived in high spirits……. and then saw the pitch! The playing surface was bumpy and the pitch was even narrower than the one we had played West Ham on a few weeks prior. We knew we needed to work hard in these conditions to avoid the frustrating draw we had in that disappointing game against the hammers.

After a warm up and team talk, Inga named the starting 11.

Naz

Wee Man/Woody/Donny/Task

Nick/Tim/Riz (c)/Slouch

Jools/Sharkey

Subs:
Rob
Matt
Immy
Frange

The game started slowly, with both teams playing well within themselves for the first 5 minutes, before Slouch and Sharkey’s silky interchange of passes put Slouch through on goal forcing a good save from the Welling keeper who tipped the shot over the bar. ASB had found their rhythm!

With the midfield duo of Tim and Riz running things in the middle of the park and with the defensive quartet of Task, Woody, Donny and Wee Man quickly snuffing out any attack from Welling, ASB grew in confidence and began to cut into the Welling defence at will. Wee Man and Nick always looked dangerous down the right flank with some great crosses flying into the box from the right back and some dangerous runs being made at the defence from Nick.

The inevitable goal came on the 15th minute after Jools and Sharkey’s great reading of each other’s game was shown again as Jools’ pass found Sharkey, who after seeing the keeper off his line, curled the ball over and around the keeper into the back of the net. A quality goal that was well deserved.

Welling 0 – ASB 1

ASB were well on top now, Naz was mopping up Welling’s long balls and Donny and Woody were winning everything in the air and on the ground. The pressure kept piling up on the Welling defense and they eventually broke again on the 30th minute after some pressure from the right saw Jools’ pass across the face of the goal find Slouch who finished convincingly from a tight angle.

Welling 0 – ASB 2

After the second goal the game started to settle down, with ASB keeping possession of the ball and leaving Welling, whose heads were beginning to drop, to chase.

HALF TIME

Knowing that we were well on top in every area of the pitch saw a confident mood during the half time break. We knew we needed to keep focused and keep working hard to keep Welling from coming back into things, but we also knew that there were more goals in the game if we played as well as we did in the first half.

The gaffer made one change during the break, bringing me on for Tim who had played really well, dominating the middle of the park with Riz.

The second half started just as the first half finished, ASB were playing some great football going forward and were winning practically every 50-50 ball in defence and midfield.

On the 55th minute Inga brought on Immy for the injured Sharkey shortly followed by Frange for Wee Man. Both players made immediate impacts, Frange bringing plenty of energy and Immy’s trickery always looked like ending with a goal.

About 10 minutes later Rob came on up front for Jools. His great hold up play and distribution surprised everyone and was definitely not what was expected from a keeper.

The pressure on the Welling back 4 started to really show as ASB won corner after corner. Nick and Task whipped in some great balls, which both Woody and Jools’ were both unlucky to score from. It was in the aftermath of one corner that ASB bagged their 3rd goal, with Donny’s millimeter perfect cross from the right finding Riz’s head who made no mistake from close range. It was another class goal to show for all of our hard work.

Welling 0 – ASB 3

ASB’s dominance was really showing now and after yet another corner the ball found its way back to Nick, who from outside the box, fired a viscous shot past the keeper’s left side grazing the post before hitting the back of the net. It was the pick of the day and
was another sign of the quality football that everyone in the ASB squad was producing during the game.

Welling 0 – ASB 4

We were cruising now and seemed to be able to carve out chances for fun. Rob’s great through ball put Immy behind the Welling defense, nut his well struck shot was well saved by the over worked keeper.

Late on in the game it was my turn to get on the score sheet, after having the ball fed into me down the left hand side I was allowed the time to turn and shoot from outside the box. The curling shot found its way over the flat footed keeper and into the top of the net.

Welling 0 - 5 ASB

Just before the final whistle the icing was very nearly put on the cake. Task’s great cross seemed to hover an inch in front of Rob’s nose, who was just unable to head home a 6th goal.

RESULT: Welling 0 – 5 ASB

I have to say that out of the games in my long and prestigious ASB career (all 4 games of it!) this was by far our best performance. The work rate was fantastic all round and we completely dominated Welling with some solid defending, slick passing and some cracking finishes.

The three players that stood out for me were Woody, Donny and Riz, but everyone had a great game.
