Match Report
Reading 0. v. ASB 9. Saturday 2nd December 2006.

A disappointing start to the day with a number of players not turning up, either from missing lifts or just not bothering.

This left the managers with just eleven players to start the game and the line up had to be quickly reshuffled to the following:-

Frange in goal

Back four of Orv, Tina, Peewee and Iain

Midfield of Nick, Task, Riz and Slouch

Up front, Gav & Diego.

The game was played in the shadow of a Government Nuclear Arms depot and I think if the managers could have borrowed the machine guns carried by the guards on patrol, the 'no-shows' for this game would have been lined up and shot for dereliction of duty.

However, the starting eleven managed to put in one of the performances of the season. The team, to a man, performed at the highest level throughout the match with great passing, midfield domination and clinical finishing.

The game itself started quietly for the first ten to fifteen minutes but burst into life with ASB's first goal, Slouch getting on the end of a Riz cross/shot. From that point onwards, Reading were put on the back foot by some slick play from the ASB midfield creating chance after chance. Fortunately, we were in the right positions this week to finish most of these chances off. Further goals in the first half came from a shot from inside the box from Gav, a low header by Riz from a corner by Peewee and Slouch's second goal, created by Diego and nicely slid past the keeper. An excellent first half show, Frange, playing his first game in goal this season, only had to really deal with the odd ball over the top because the back four kept it so tight, they were rarely breached. Also, the troops were bolstered midway through the first half by the arrival of Juzza, who had battled his way through traffic and mud to add his considerable presence to the proceedings.

The second half went pretty much as the first half did, continuous pressure by ASB constantly putting Reading on the back foot. The avalanche of goals continued, with Slouch completing his hat-trick before being subbed in the seventieth minute, replaced by Juzza. Gavin added his second goal of the game from an eventual pass from Diego, striking home from ten yards. Even with this onslaught of goals, poor old Diego just could not get that elusive first goal for ASB. No matter how hard he tried it would not come but he still managed 3 or 4 assists. Then in the 80 minute, a moment to savour - Slouch came back on to replace Diego and from Slouch's cut back from the goal line, Juzza hit a sweet low powerful sidefoot shot into the corner of the net, ala Teddy Sheringham. Immediately Juzza was mobbed and cheered by the whole team
for such a quality finish. Riz scored a superb header from a Task corner for his second goal of the game and Gavin completed his hat-trick after a through ball from Riz. Although the keeper got a touch to Gav's shot, it carried enough power to loop up into the net.

Summary of the scorers:- Slouch 3, Gavin 3, Riz 2 and Juzza 1.

Overall, it was great to be back to winning ways and the style of the win was encouraging with passing and movement all over the field from the back, the midfield and forwards. Let this match set the tone for future displays, starting with Crewe away on Saturday 9th December. However, let us also ensure we show the commitment to have a full squad of players for these games so that we can have at least 15 players to choose from not just a bare eleven.
