Match Report

It's often said the sign of a great team is how it reacts in adversity, and by all accounts we did not react in the right way last week. With Millwall being banned from the League for the rest of the season, it was time for us to readdress our attitude and our place in the IFA. So it was good to get straight back on the pitch and exorcise the ghosts of the Wimbledon defeat. Despite only having 10 men on the day, everybody present stood up to be counted and produced one of the team performances so far this season. We lined up as follows:

GK : Juzza
RB : Orville LB : Frange
CB : Tina & Woody
RM : Sharkey LM : Slouch
CM : Task & Jordan
S : Jools

It was important that we imposed ourselves on the game from the start and looked to score first. After just a minute we had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for a tight offside call. No matter, we continued to attack the Brentford back line and before long it was 1-0; a goal kick from Juzza was picked up by Sharkey who ran across the pitch before firing a left footed shot inside the near post. Soon it was two, this time with Jordan making a similar strong run before shooting across the keeper into the far corner.

Being a man down meant we had to defend as a unit from front to back. With two strong banks of four and Jools constantly harassing the Brentford defence, they never had a moment's peace as we won nearly every 50-50 ball (Task won a number of important headers) and kept possession as well as we could. Juzza had little to do in goal but could always be heard at the back and mixed up his distribution well.

The third goal was a little fortunate, as Task delivered a cross from the left which swirled over the keeper's head and plopped into the top corner. Jools continued to fight for every ball, laying it off intelligently and linking up play well. Played in by Frange he passed the ball across the keeper but saw his shot go just wide of the post. Meanwhile at the back Orv was putting the tackles in and getting a few knocks to the head for his troubles, while Woody and Tina were dealing admirably with Brentford's long balls. The fourth goal was classic ASB, a good move on the left released Slouch who got to the byline, and his cut-back was swept into the top corner by Sharkey, making an excellent late run from deep.

Half time arrived with us 4-0 up, but we knew the second half would be tougher as our energy levels would run low. It was important we kept up our intensity for as long as possible and made sure they didn't get an early goal. As it turned out we were the ones to score early in the second half - Jordan picked up the ball on the edge of the area, swivelled and hit a fine left foot shot that swerved into the top corner.

Brentford had swapped things round opting for a more physical presence up front but the defence was still coping well with their attacks. Only once did they get behind us but even then Slouch had run back to cover. At the other end we continued to create chances with Jools always in the thick of things, and soon it was 6-0 as Jordan completed his hattrick with a deflected shot from outside the area. Slouch made it 7-0 as Jools held up the ball and laid it back to Frange, who played Slouch in for a cool finish over the outcoming keeper. With the game in the bag and Tina on the hunt for his 50th ASB goal, he moved to centre mid with Jordan at left back and Frange at centre back.

We began to tire and Brentford saw more of the ball around our area, but despite hitting the post and forcing Juzza into one important save we held firm. Eventually we were able to break out and Task played the ball through for Jools to score the goal he had deserved all game. Tina almost got the goal he was looking for with a fine first time shot which beat the keeper but not the far post. Not long after the final whistle went with ASB deserved winners.

Overall everyone put in a fine performance, although it was Jools who won the MOTM vote after all the tireless work he had put in as the lone striker. It's not easy when you're a man down but it certainly helps concentrate the mind - no arguing with the ref, no off the ball incidents, just focusing on the task in hand. Everyone showed a really positive attitude, so let's ensure we all maintain this in the games to come.
