On an unfeasably hot June Sunday ASB decided they would rather play a game than enjoy a nice cold beer in some pub garden. Taking on our own keeper Naz's (apparent) Sunday team - though it transpired they were a team put together for some trip to Africa to represent the UK.
Inga, fresh from a pre-match night out, had an difficult team to pick, missing players in key positions. We lined up thus:
Rob in goal
Simon at LB
Tina and Orv in the middle
Riz (making a return to the team) at RB
a midfield of James G on the left
Kendrick and Brian in the middle and
Nick Nick on the right
Sharkey and debutant Tony up front
The game started reasonably even, with both team probing and coming up against quite solid defenses.
Slowly it ASB began to grab more of the possession with Kendrick running the show. Nick and James were getting forward to support Sharkey and Tony, with the latter making a real nuisance of himself in the UK defense. There were a few shots on goal, and a deflection from a Brian shot hit the top of the cross bar, but nothing to really trouble Naz in the oppositions goal.
Meanwhile UK were looking threatening on the break, with one or two errors in midfield allowing them to bear down on Orv, Tina and Rob...Simon, on his return was doing a fantastic job of mopping up anything that the others might have missed as the score remained 0-0 midway into the half.
Inga decided it was time to bring Keir on for some exercise, and this coincided beautifully with Ken wanting a break in the blistering heat. Nick joined Brian in the centre of midfield and Keir got to work on the right. It paid dividends when the fresh legs slotted in the opening goal minutes after having another chance miss the top corner by a foot. 1-0 to ASB.
UK weren't going to take it lying down and after another midfield mistake they broke up the park to score and level the game.
ASB continued to press and play the ball on the deck, with James causing trouble on the left and the forwards getting the odd sight at goal to make Naz work. Shortly before half time Brian was pulled back at the edge of the box and Tina stepped up, claiming something about senior players, to put the dead ball into the top right hand corner. 2-1 at half time.
Inga decided he needed some entertainment in the second half, and it was all change with Sharkey and Tina swapping roles, Ken came back on with Nick going back to right mid, Keir went to support Tina and Tony took a rest.
Little did Inga realise how big an impact the Squirrel would make, and within 5 minutes he was running rampant on the UK defense. The pace of Keir and T was proving too much for UK, who's rather intense looking warm up was beginning to show signs of tiredness. However it was UK who struck first in the second half, after a foul on the edge of the area, the resultant free kick was saved by Rob only to be turned in by a UK forward after the defense were caught napping. 2-2.
ASB responded well and with seconds were back in front, Tina harrying in the box stretched to push the ball onto Keir who netted his second. 3-2. Naz now came off for UK and this proved a turning point.
ASB now started to show the fresher legs, with the UK midfield tiring, Ken and Brian were able to get forward to support, Nick and James also offering help as the pressure piled on. Tina popped up to grab his second from close in, before getting a third from an Orv corner. 5-2 and a hat-trick for the Squirrel.
Soon after Brian found Keir unmarked on the edge of the box and he coolly slotted home his 3rd as it became the Keir and Tina show. Not to be outdone Tina managed to turn in another header from a Nick cross to make it 4 for him on the day and 7-2.
UK were now exhausted, and the heat was taking its toll on ASB too, when a breakaway saw the "posted missing" UK midfield now bearing down on the ASB goal with their 2 forwards to bundle to ball over the line and grab a consolation and make it 7-3.
A final push forward from ASB saw Tony latching onto a loose ball in the box and smash home his first and ASBs 8th.
If UK hadn't spent two hours warming up they might have lasted the 90, but as it was it was a valuable experiment for Inga, creating what could be a new partnership for the coming season and Worldnet tournament in July.
