……And so, ASB assemble in the Old Deer Car park on a sunny but bitterly cold January morning for our first league fixture against Wycombe in quite a few years. As I rolled into the car park I was greeted to screams of ‘awite bwuv’ from Peewee who was as hyper as ever. Of course, it wouldn’t be a ‘proper’ Saturday morning if the kit was there first, so keeping in ASB tradition the kit was the very last thing that arrived. With a strong squad to pick from, Titchmarsh and Burnsy started to hatch their master plan for the game against the chair boys, whilst the massed ranks of ASB gathered outside on a pitch that was already cut to pieces with a swamp placed directly in the middle. Lovely Jubbly.
After a short warm up and quick chat the starting eleven was called out…..
Rob
Peewee Tina Hef Lammy
Nick Riz Donny Tizzy
Larry Sharkey
The first half kicked off with ASB kicking uphill into a very strong wind knocking the ball about but not really creating any decent chances. It wasn’t all one way traffic though as Wycombe looked dangerous on the counter with a couple of very handy players in the middle of the park. The first twenty minutes went by without nothing of note happening, Bowles were most definitely playing the better football and having the lions share of possession but just not creating any clear cut chances. A series of corners and balls into the box were either dealt with by the keeper or a Stanley player not being able to do much with it. Although it must be said first half conditions kicking into the wind were atrocious.
With ASB seemingly in control of the game disaster struck half an hour in when the Chair boys took the lead. The ball was lost on the edge of Wycombe’s penalty area and after a swift counter attack they had themselves a corner which was whipped in with pace, Rob climbed to claim in and at first many people thought to themselves, good claim, but unfortunately he dropped it right into the path of a dark blue shirt and we was a goal down.
Not long after that ASB were dealt another blow when once again a complacent pass was retrieved by a Wycombe shirt, who took the ball, evaded four or five tackles very skilfully then from 20 yards curling the ball into the far corner of the net. No-one was to blame for this goal, we just have to hold your hands up to a piece of football genius. So with ASB two goals down and struggling to create any clear cut chances, heads could easily of dropped at an extreme rate. This most definitely wasn’t the case.
With us now being two goals down and it all to do, we responded in a superb fashion with both Sharkey and Larry making the keeper work and Donny firing wide from twenty yards out. What happened next was very Ryan Giggs indeed, Riz receiving the ball in the middle of the park and floating a lovely floated pass into the path of Jools, who had just replaced the injured Larry up front. The Dutch master took the ball coolly round the keeper and from 12 yards out struck the ball over the bar. With half time approaching we needed to try and nick a goal to cut the arrears down to the single goal to take into the second half with us, and it came. Bang on half time the ball was floated in from a corner and at the far post Sharkey stabbed home from 3 yards to bring the Bowles right back into the game. The fat man in the middle blew the whistle and ASB gathered for the break with their heads held high knowing they were more than capable of winning this game and also realising they would be playing with the winds up there backs in the second half.
The gaffers drifted off and made a few half time changes with Task coming on at left back replacing Lammy, Mungo replacing Tizzy at left wing and Matt replacing Donny in the middle of the park.
The second half kicked off with Weeman reffing and ASB looking to impose themselves on the second half from the off, whilst looking to keep a good shape to the team. Wycombe struggled to cope with the wind (which had definitely picked up from the first half) and ASB upped the tempo and put a lot of pressure on their defence getting right in their faces. ASB were most definitely in the ascendancy for almost the whole of the second half and the equaliser came about ten minutes into the second half. The ball flying in from the right wing and Jools header flying straight at the keeper who parried it straight into the path of the oncoming Sharkey who nodded the ball in for 2-2.
Now with the winner in sight and with lots still to do the r’s pushed for the equaliser. There was no doubt it would come and when it did it was no surprise and the goal went to Jools who thoroughly deserved it as his contribution to the game was MasterCard. The ball was received by Riz who played it into his feet and from 12 yards out coolly slotted home past the oncoming keeper with his left foot. 3-2 up and Stanley had a thoroughly deserved lead. The game petered out with ASB looking to add to their tally and to be fair there was only ever one team in this one. Mungo had a great corner which the wind nearly took into the net, many people thought it had gone in, including Mungo, who had his hands in the air in celebration.
And so, the game ended 3-2, a great recovery from being two goals down in the first 30 minutes to come back and win this one quite comfortably in the end, which the score line doesn’t suggest. We have to take the lessons we have learnt from this game into the rest of the season. We know we have a tendency to lose our heads in the face of adversity, but on Saturday we didn’t and we held our heads high and got the result we deserved and battled so hard for.
